Jessica Dorcelien Staff Writer The Apex Men’s Varsity soccer season has begun with three straight conference wins and a four game winning streak as this year’s players and coaches strive to “Bring Back the Cup!” In the season opening games against non-Southwest Athletic Conference opponents, Apex scored a total of fourteen goals, an average of more than three goals per game. Apex’s attackers are led by seniors Will Tomlinson, Patrick Stingl, and the leading scorer of the season thus far, Cole Pena. Pena scored four of the seven goals in Apex’s 7-0 win against Holly Springs High School on Sept. 8. The defense is led by seniors, Sean McMurray, Ryan Heavner, Josh Foss, and Connor Carr. Alternating goalies, Corey Vodicka, Jean Andre Madrid and Alex Ramsey have only let on a combined 2 goals in 3 games since the beginning of conference play, In anticipation for the upcoming SWAC games, coaches Kevin Todd and Lee Oglesby combine their 30+ years of coaching to create an effective game plan. With six wins and one tie, Apex currently shares first place with rival school Middle Creek. The highly anticipated game will take place at Middle Creek High School on Sept. 28. Cameron Goz
Sports Editor Being a New York Mets fan is singlehandedly the most difficult thing I have ever done and continue to do. No, I have not had a very difficult life, residing in currently the number one place to live in America (according to Money Magazine), Apex, North Carolina. But I spent the first nine years of my life living in New York, and unfortunately I was doomed since birth. Both my mother and brother were and are a die-hard Mets fan, and I guess you can say the curse rubbed off on me, and significantly at that. I am the definition of a fanatic, (a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause) and it may be fair to say the Mets are somewhat of a religious ritual of mine. I have been prone to go to superstitious lengths for my team. While my lucky socks are not going to send one soaring over the fence to win the game, who is to say the crushing 6-5 defeat was not because I forgot to wear my royal blue Mets cap (just a hypothetical, it’s always on come first pitch). Jessica Dorcelien Staff Writer Subjects: Alternative Learning Center and In School Suspension College: Dismuke initially graduated from Appalachian State University with a teaching degree and later attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for an electrical engineering degree. Prior to Apex High School: Dismuke has experience as an electrical engineer. In his most recent years, he worked as a kindergarten teacher where his students “absolutely loved him.” When asked which he prefers, engineering or teaching, Dismuke chose teaching. He prefers the availability and the ability to spend more time with his three children. Dismuke has lived in Cary, North Carolina for the past twenty years and is long-time friends with Mr. Gregg Thomas, a social studies teacher here at AHS. Hobbies: Dismuke enjoys logical activities, including math, puzzles, and reading. He participated in football, wrestling, and baseball during his youth and high school career. Favorite Books: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis Favorite Movies: The Harry Potter Series Message for his students: “Get serious” and “prepare for doing something.” Dismuke wants his students to take their education seriously and use their resources to preferably graduate and create an optimistic future for their post high school career, whether or not that future includes further education. Henry McKeand Editor-in-Chief and A&E Editor Motivation to Become a Teacher: Hampton has wanted to be a teacher since she was in the third grade. “I love seeing the reaction when kids finally get it,” she said. She also enjoys math, especially Algebra. Previous Teaching Jobs: Hampton first taught fifth grade in Gaston County. Then she moved to San Diego and taught high school for four years. She taught at Apex from 2006 to 2011 and was teaching at Salem Middle the last four years. Best High School Memory: Her time spent running cross country was her fondest memory from high school. She met her best friend in cross country and is still very close with her. “I loved being a part of something…it’s always a great group.” Favorite Restaurant: Irregardless Cafe in Raleigh Best Thing to do on a Rainy Day: She would watch the rain, especially the thunderstorms. “I'd open the windows or go outside, under cover of course, and just watch and listen.” Free Time Activities: Hampton enjoys running, yoga, swimming, and playing with her children. Favorite T.V. Show: Orange is the New Black Favorite Movie: Toy Soldiers How Apex Compares to Other Schools: Hampton loves Apex High. “I’ve been to other places and this is the only place that I’ve come back to. It just feels like home.” Teaching Style: “Coach Thomas shared a great quote: ‘They don't care what you know until they know you care,’” said Hampton. She hopes that her students know that she cares about them by building a rapport and letting them think for themselves. Kenison Garratt Editor-in-Chief and A&E Editor Hometown: Sanford, North Carolina College: She attended the University of South Carolina and received her Bachelor’s degree in hotel, restaurants and tourism management. She then got her Master’s degree in teaching at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In graduate school, Battles had the highest grade point average in her graduating class. Past teaching experience: This is her sixth year teaching. Previously, she taught at Southern Lee High School in Sanford, North Carolina. Subjects: She teaches Foods I and II. “[I teach these] because I wished I had taken these classes in high school,” explains Battles, “and then I would have known what I wanted to go into in college.” Family: Battles has a dog named Miles and a cat named Winnie. Miles is a dachshund, and Winnie is a stray who showed up on her doorstep about a year ago. She has not had any children but is currently expecting. “I’m expecting my first baby, it’s a boy, in October,” says Battles, “Grady, it was my great grandfather’s name.” Before coming to Apex... she was a catering manager and event planner at the Hyatt Hotel in Savannah, Georgia. Besides teaching… she works as a waitress. Favorite television series: “The Office,” says Battles, “because I find Steve Carell hilarious in it.” Favorite books: “My favorite books are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy,” says Battles, “I like them because they have a strong female lead, and they were unexpected. You never knew which way they were going to go.” Grace Fendrick, Cameron Goz Web & Features Editor, Sports Editor If anyone's name or grade is incorrect, or if you know who someone unnamed is please comment below.
Grace Fendrick Features & Web Editor College: Delaney Titus received both her BA in history with teaching concentration and her MA in Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Social Studies from North Carolina State University (NCSU) after attending Appalachian State University (ASU) her freshman year. Inspiration: “My dad wasn’t a teacher, but he worked with kids with special needs and helping them transition from school to a job. I was really inspired by that because a lot of times people look past those kids. He also coached sports, and I was always at a school somewhere.” Passion for history: Titus recalls of her love of history in high school saying, “I took the AP (Advanced Placement) exam for every [AP] history [except AP European History] without actually taking the class. I couldn’t fit it in my schedule.” Hobbies: She enjoys watching Netflix and playing with her birds. In college she enjoyed competing on a rugby team, but in high school she was in marching and concert band. Guilty pleasure: “Watching terrible TV. Watching crappy MTV shows and crappy Bravo shows, that type of thing.” Grace Fendrick Features & Web Editor Show off your school spirit this week by participating in Peak Week 2015.
