Kenison Garratt Editor-in-Chief and A&E Editor Hometown: Sanford, North Carolina College: She attended the University of South Carolina and received her Bachelor’s degree in hotel, restaurants and tourism management. She then got her Master’s degree in teaching at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In graduate school, Battles had the highest grade point average in her graduating class. Past teaching experience: This is her sixth year teaching. Previously, she taught at Southern Lee High School in Sanford, North Carolina. Subjects: She teaches Foods I and II. “[I teach these] because I wished I had taken these classes in high school,” explains Battles, “and then I would have known what I wanted to go into in college.” Family: Battles has a dog named Miles and a cat named Winnie. Miles is a dachshund, and Winnie is a stray who showed up on her doorstep about a year ago. She has not had any children but is currently expecting. “I’m expecting my first baby, it’s a boy, in October,” says Battles, “Grady, it was my great grandfather’s name.” Before coming to Apex... she was a catering manager and event planner at the Hyatt Hotel in Savannah, Georgia. Besides teaching… she works as a waitress. Favorite television series: “The Office,” says Battles, “because I find Steve Carell hilarious in it.” Favorite books: “My favorite books are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy,” says Battles, “I like them because they have a strong female lead, and they were unexpected.
