Cameron Goz Sports Editor After an exhilarating college football season filled with as much parody as one can ask for, the playoff has been determined, and the final four teams are as followed in order of rank: Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma. No. 1 Clemson will play No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl while No. 2 Alabama matches up against No. 3 Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl. Unlike last year, there was no controversy in the final playoff verdict as all teams selected were a given, and all four won their respective conferences. The last schools standing are clearly the most deserving and talented teams across the nation, and fans around the country are in store for another exciting installment of the College Football Playoff. Grace Fendrick Features and Web Editor The Hour of Code™ is a global movement taking place this year from Dec. 7 through Dec. 13, which is Computer Education Week. The Hour of Code’s main message is to provide lots of people with access to computer programming and to help teach it in fun innovative ways. With over 192,000 events worldwide and countless personal interactions, the movement is making a monumental difference. Big names in the IT community publicly support this campaign, including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. At Apex High School there is a great computer science program through the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT), but there are many students who do not get the opportunity to be a part of it. The Hour of Code also hopes to reach a younger age range, shown with games involving Anna and Elsa, and so much more. Tell your friends and family to try it, and try it for yourself here. Montserrat Rivera Staff Writer For those with nothing to do over winter break, there is a solution. This December brings plenty of movies and television series to Netflix, Amazon Prime, iTunes, HBO Now, Acorn TV, and Hulu. So, here are some shows you can binge watch instead of dealing with your annoying (but lovable) family: Jes Stiehm News Editor Last Friday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made an appearance in Raleigh, North Carolina to promote his campaign. However, Trump was met with substantial opposition during the night. Trump even ended the rally early, cutting short Q&A time when he unexpectedly left the stage. During the event, he brought up the increasingly controversial issue of Syrian immigration. Reportedly he stated that undocumented workers are treated better than American veterans. Trump did not go into detail when discussing his plans and strategies regarding the issue. "If I win, they gotta go back. They have got to go back," said Trump. Later on he discussed the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino and France. “I would handle it so tough, you have no idea. You don't even want to hear it.” Taylor Tyson Staff Writer Holiday time is near, time for tidings and great cheer! But most importantly, the holiday season is all about the gifts. Meenakshi Sathish Staff Writer The pressure is on to create the perfect transcript to send off to colleges; ergo students are recommended to visit colleges and figure out where they want to go. College tours are one out of the many ways students can decide what school they want to attend. By going to these campuses, students have the opportunity to talk to other undergraduates at the school, see the environment, and learn about what the school offers. The concern is whether these tours are worth the gas price? Some students say they do not prioritize visiting college campus because the schools do not emphasize points that students want to hear in order to get into their prospective schools. College tours are often seen as advertisements rather than informational presentations of what it takes to be a student at the respective university. Grace Fendrick Features and Web Editor The holiday season has begun, and decorations are everywhere you look. Candy canes and light-up reindeer in yards and wreaths, stockings, and bows on everything they can be hung on. You name it, and it is all there. However, the most iconic decoration of all is the Christmas tree, and just like people, Christmas trees come in a variety of ways. Some are big, some are small, some are real, and some are fake. Which brings about the great question: Is your Christmas tree real or fake? After polling 242 people on Twitter, the results are in. Festive Fun Facts
Nick Stines Staff Writer Former lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, Scott Weiland, was found dead in his sleep on the night of Thursday, Dec. 3 in Bloomington, Minnesota while on tour with The Wildabouts, his new group. A bag of cocaine was found in the room in which he was found. Weiland suffered from substance abuse during his years with STP; particularly heroin. In 1995, Weiland was arrested after deputies found him with crack and heroin. He plead guilty for heroin possession in 1998 which led to his departure from the band in STP. He then joined Velvet Revolvers until he rejoined STP in 2008. Weiland was then ‘fired’ from the band in 2013. “Not sure how I can be ‘terminated’ from a band that I founded, fronted, and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out,” Weiland said in 2013. Weiland has been with The Wildabouts since he was fired and was recently supposed to go on tour until he died. The bassist was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, so the band will not play their show in Minnesota. Meenakshi Sathish Staff Writer After seeing automatic shoelaces in Back to the Future Part II and a microwave that cooks food in a matter of a second in Spy Kids, it seems as if the world is developing at the rate of a melting glacier. But, when Otis Johnson was released from prison after forty-four years, it was as if he stepped into another dimension. Otis Johnson was arrested at a relatively young age of twenty-five for assaulting and attempting to murder a police officer; he was released with $40, an ID, two bus tickets, and documents on his criminal case history. Upon his release, he was followed by Al Jazeera’s camera men and documented his foray into the 21st century. He was shocked by the amount of technology that is a an integral part of the world today. “What? Everybody became…CIA, or agents, and stuff like that?” Otis asked himself upon seeing people talking into their earbuds, or as Johnson calls them “wires”, and walking around while staring at their phones. In the documentary, it shows how Johnson struggles with using the technology of today, like using a fare card to pass through the turnstile at the subway. Johnson was also quick to observe the effect of cell phones on society and pointed out how expensive it has gotten to make a call through the public payphones. Laughing, he remarks, “I found out when I got out on the streets, they don’t use these.” McKenzie Feldman Staff Writer After an exhausting season of hard work, stressful rehearsals, and memorable performances, Dancing with the Stars season 21 has come to a close.
