Ashton Baysden A&E Editor If you are human, you have undoubtedly thought at some point in your life, “Why can’t we just take our groceries from the shelves and leave? Why do we have to go through checkout lines even if we’re just buying a loaf of bread?” Checkout lines are an established enemy of the general public; they are long and stressful, and, frankly, they have the ability to make anyone tempted to put all of their groceries back and come back later. Life would be so much easier if we could just skip those pesky lines; however, thanks to Amazon’s latest project, we might be able to do just that next year. Amazon just announced the development of its new store, Amazon Go. If consumers download the Amazon Go app and scan it when they enter the store, they can take any product they would like off the shelves and walk out with it. The company’s advanced technology will detect and record when products are taken off of or put back onto the shelves; each item is then added to the consumer’s digital shopping cart. When the consumer leaves the store, their Amazon.com account is charged. No lines, no rude cashiers, no credit card mishaps. Jessica Dorcelien
News Editor Dec. 7, 1941 is a “date which will live in infamy” as Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and six additional military bases on the Hawaiian island of Oahu launched the United States into the second world war. The surprise strike resulted in the destroying of more than 150 planes, the damage of fifteen ships, and the loss of over 2,300 lives. As a swift reaction to the unforeseen attack, Hawaii was put under martial law, causing schools to close, mail to be censored, and food and fuel to be rationed. Most importantly, during this period of rising “Anti-Japanese” paranoia, 127,000 persons of Japanese ancestry were forced into detentions centers and internment camps as what we, as Americans, now reflect on as being one of the most overt violations of civil liberties in American history. Carlee Lewis Staff Writer An Oakland fire broke out Saturday night, Dec. 3, during a concert. The building was a warehouse home to artists who cannot afford rent. The housing was scheduled to be inspected in the few weeks before the fire. The fire has resulted in so far, thirty-six deaths. This fire is believed to be the deadliest fire in Oakland, California history. At the time of the fire, there were fifty to one hundred people in the warehouse. The warehouse lacked sprinklers and clear exits. The cause of the fire is believed to be something related to the construction that was going on in the building. The city had not approved any construction and, they had no permit. A former resident reported that they stayed in the warehouse and were surrounded by drugs and filth. Mack, another former resident stated, “It’s that we lived in there in uninhabitable conditions. It looks nice. It makes for nice pictures. But that place is a death trap.” Given these reasons, the police are reporting that there will be possible charges from manslaughter to murder in this case. Rhea Sodem Staff Writer Cirque du Soleil is known worldwide as one of the best circus shows. They incorporate different stories and myths into their intricate and difficult acts. Cirque du Soleil rarely has any major injuries or accidents due to their many safety precautions, but sometimes things do not go the way acts are planned. In 2013, a former Olympian, who was due to perform on stage with the circus, broke her vertebrae and her arm from a ninety-four foot drop. It was told that a safety wire had become detached due to her rapid descent. That was three years ago, but recently another accident occurred from the backstage crew. A man named Olivier Rochette was killed when preparing for a show in San Francisco. He was hit by a telescopic lift and was immediately taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he died at the hospital. He was no ordinary crew member; he was the son of one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil, Gilles Ste-Croix . Daniel Lamarre, who is the CEO of Cirque du Soleil, said, "I am heartbroken. I wish to extend in my name and in the name of all Cirque du Soleil employees my sincerest sympathies and offer my full support to Gilles and his family. Olivier has always been a member of our tight family and a truly beloved colleague.” Is there a pattern here? Cirque du Soleil is the ultimate place you want to work if you are in the acrobatics and entertainment industry. The world of trapeze, balancing, unicycles, and many more used to be a safe sport with all the safety precautions taken these days, but now with machinery malfunctions is this a safe career to for working? Is this going to affect future generations? This is a very important question to those who are looking for a potential career in this industry. The answer to that is yes. It can definitely affect people in the future because now safety depends on technology and machinery. People will have to trust technology that may or may not malfunction with their lives, so this accident can have people reconsidering this future career path. Jacob Sosdian Staff Writer After months of protesting where thousands of peaceful protestors and millions of people have spoken out against the North Dakota pipeline, the Army Corp of Engineers announced that they will be looking for a different route. After this was announced, the thousands of dedicated protesters cheered, played the drums and chanted. Tribal leaders from the Sioux Tribe and supporters were fighting for months to protect their land from the hazardous pipeline that could damage the people’s water supply. Chief Arvol Looking Horse, Keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, said “People have said that this is a make it or a break it, and I guess we made it.” The tribe leaders are beginning to worry that the the Army Corps Engineers will not keep their promise of rerouting the pipeline. Some of the members of the Army Corps are saying they should continue with the pipeline. The tribe leaders also give much gratitude for the help and support of the many organized groups that took part in this protesting. Patrick LaLiberte Staff Writer All the way across the Pacific in Japan, some Domino’s restaurants, an international pizza chain, had a pretty wacky idea this holiday season: reindeer delivering pizzas. Certain sections of Japan are expected to get large amounts of snowfall this winter, which will make delivering pizzas by bike a hassle. To combat this, Domino’s is attempting to train reindeer to deliver pizzas in the harsh weather conditions. Domino’s has stated that they will have to do some test runs before making a decision on whether or not they will go through with this plan. Obviously, training reindeer to deliver pizza is not an easy task; reindeer do not tend to listen and do not follow directions very well. Domino’s is aware that training reindeer to deliver pizzas is not easy, but it seems that they underestimated just how challenging it would really be. First, they attempted to place pizza boxes on the reindeers’ backs, but they kept sliding off too easily. Their next idea was to have the reindeer pull big red sleighs filled with pizza, which worked a lot better. However, there are still many difficulties with training the reindeer to actually deliver pizzas. Amber Hancock-Burns Staff Writer Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS, is a disease that weakens muscles, breaks down the nervous system, and currently has no cure. Although it has no way to fully rid someone of the disease, a doctor at Duke University is testing a new drug called Lunasin, due to it showing signs of reversing the effects of the disease. When someone is diagnosed with ALS, they begin to lose the connection between the brain and muscles, which leads to loss of motor skills and weakness of the arms, legs, and mouth. When one has the disease, they are gradually unable to move, walk, talk or swallow. This loss in simple abilities lead to debilitation, and no one has ever fully recovered. Madeline Rudd Staff Writer A terrible tragedy shocked the world Tuesday when LAMIA Flight 2933 holding seventy-seven people crashed into the side of a mountain in Medellin, Columbia. On board were players and coaches for Brazil’s Chapecoense soccer team along with twenty journalists ready to cover the soccer team's journey to the Copa Sudamericana, South American Cup, finals. When investigators got to the scene, they only found six survivors and reported that the other seventy-one passengers had died. Rhea Sodem Staff Writer It is known that the two main treatments for cancer is chemotherapy and radiation, but now researchers in Chicago are working on another treatment called immunotherapy. For a long time, scientists have been working to find new drugs or external treatment to cancer, but this new treatment focuses on the immune system acting, to fight the disease or just boost the immune system itself. There are two two types of drugs, Ipilimumab and Nivolumab, that work together to reinforce and support the immune system. immunotherapy targets the cancerous cells only, in contrast to radiation or chemo which attacks all cells. Scientists are calling this new treatment promising and encouraging. Dr. James Larkin, who is a part of the study, said "We've seen these drugs working in a wide range of cancers, and I think we are at the beginning of a new era in treating cancer." Jessica Stiehm News Editor Friday, Nov. 25, 2016 marked the death of Fidel Castro, the former President of Cuba. The death of the political figure is leaving people reeling with how to remember him. Regardless, Miami, Florida broke out in celebration when the citizens learned of his death, hundreds of people taking to the streets with pots and pans, flags, motorcycles, and countless other ways of fest. However, from the political side of things, the United States are unsure how this change in leadership will affect U.S. and Cuban relations. U.S. citizens have been allowed to visit Cuba since late August of this year. Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother, has been in power for the past several years, but with the passing of his brother, perhaps wider change will occur. There remains some insecurity concerning this intangible bridge, what with the U.S. President-Elect, Donald Trump, assuming the presidency in two months. In the past, Mr. Trump has spoken conflictingly in regards to our relationship with Cuba. But two months is a long time, politically speaking. Perhaps this turbulent time is what Cuba needs to become free. |
