Bryce Cullen Staff Writer Are the days of flying cars coming sooner than we think? With the right effort they might just be. Uber has just recently teams up with an advanced aircraft engineer by the name of Mark Moore. Moore has spent the past three decades of his life working with NASA. He has served as chief technologist of on-demand mobility at Langley Research Center; he is testing the likely hood of being able to invent a Vertical Take-off, (VTOL). According to Bloomberg Technology, Uber’s head of product, Nikhil Goel stated, “Uber continues to see its role as a catalyst of the growing developing VTOL ecosystem,” They are so confident in the VTOL system they said these “flying cars” have the capability of taking someone from San Francisco to San Jose in fifteen minutes. On a normal day when someone takes a car, the trek takes around two hours. But if they are able to make VTOL cars a reality, it would change the way travel, work, and even live. However this is not their first attempt in quick easy aerial transportation; Uber once offered a helicopter service. This service was able to bring passengers from New York City to the Hamptons on Long Island or vice versa. Although this does not mean it was perfect, these services were often very expensive and temporary marketing gimmicks. This is how the VTOL planes fall into place, since they are much cheaper to operate. That leaves us with the fact Flying Cars are looking to be a thing of the not-so-distant future. Claire Garner Staff Writer Technology is advancing at an alarming rate, but pretty soon with a new Android app, you can wear it. Kenza Zouiten, Swedish fashion blogger and co-founder of Ivyrevel, has teamed up with Google to bring you a dress that fits to your everyday activities and lifestyle. When you download the app, you will go through a process of personalizing the look of the dress, and your phone will recommend the rest. During the week, by using Snapshot API, the application will track your daily activities such as where you work, what you do at night, and how much physical activity you engage in. For example, do you go to the local burger joint with your closest friends, or do you go to a high-class restaurant with a date? Do you sit in an office chair all day, or does your job require a little more action? Not only will the app detect your actions but also your surroundings. Is it typically windy where you live or relatively calm? Do you live in a warm and sunny climate or cold and cloudy? These are just a few of the many factors that will make the perfect dress. Jake Gibson Staff Writer On Feb. 1, Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak at the University of California. However, the event was canceled after violent rioting, involving over 1,500 students, broke out. Milo Yiannopoulos is a thirty-three year old gay, Catholic, right-wing conservative, self-made millionaire and drop-out of Cambridge University. Milo is a Senior editor at Breitbart with his own tour known as “Dangerous.” In Milo’s tour, he travels to different Universities discussing Feminism, Muslim rights, and wide variety of other issues. Milo refers to himself as a troll, in an ABC interview with Terry Moran. McKenzie Feldman Web Editor Tom Brady and the Patriots are the Super Bowl LI champions. Although many prefer watching the game, others are always anticipating the fiery halftime show and the laugh-out-loud commercials. A historic Super Bowl comeback went perfectly with this historically executed halftime show. Claire Garner Staff Writer If you are a dog lover looking for a good laugh along with some tears, grab your tissues because this is the movie for you. Although there was controversy about the mistreatment of dogs during the filming process, the relationship that this dog makes with his owners will make you want to run home and play with your own dog. If you have read the book, you will notice some changes to the plot, but the dog still has the same heart that W. Bruce Cameron developed throughout the novel. For those of you who have not seen the previews, the movie is about a dog who reincarnates as a brand new puppy after death. If you have seen other dog movies such as Marley and Me where the dog passes away, you get to suffer through the sad passing of this dog four times. Even though it sounds like you will be crying a river through the whole film, there is a fitting balance of gloomy moments to go with cheerful laughter and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Amelia Borger Staff Writer The final week of January and first week of February is a very somber time for NASA. It is the anniversaries of the Apollo 1 accident, the Challenger accident, and the Columbia accident. In these past couple weeks, NASA and many other branches of the space program reflect on the lives of the astronauts lost, along with other men and women who gave their lives in the pursuit of adventure. Jan. 31 is recognized as NASA’s day of remembrance. On Jan. 27, 1967, veteran astronaut Gus Grissom, first American spacewalker Edward White, and rookie Roger Chaffee were performing a pre-launch pad test, a normal procedure before every mission. Once they were sealed in the capsule, there was a spark, and a fire broke out in the highly oxygenated capsule, killing all three in less than a minute. A later investigation led engineers to find a major design flaw and built a safer module, ultimately leading to safer Apollo missions to the moon. Ashton Baysden A&E Editor The first six months of a new President’s term are always the most influential ones; it is the time where citizens get to see if the promises made during the campaign will be kept. It typically takes a few months for the newly-elected to leader to be comfortable enough in the office to start making executive orders; however, it only took President Donald Trump one week. On Friday, Jan. 27, Trump signed an executive order titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.” This order prevents anyone from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States; additionally, it prevents any Syrian refugee from seeking asylum here. Many citizens are refusing to accept the order due to its singling out of one of America’s most oppressed minority populations. Hundreds of thousands are protesting the order, but the protests are more financial than physical. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organization looking to sue the Trump administration, received $24 million in donations just over the weekend following the executive order. According to Vanity Fair, this is about “six times the amount the nonprofit usually raises in an entire year.” Many of the people donating and spreading the word are celebrities using their platform to speak out against the order. Jessica Dorcelien Editor-in-Chief President Donald J. Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by almost 2.9 million votes. Since the publicity of these voting discrepancies, Trump has claimed that a whopping three to five millions voters had voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election. This new allegation, according to major news source CNN, is said to have no statistical backing and has the potential to “erode the President’s credibility.” The Constitution includes the establishment of the Electoral College, a process for electing the next President and Vice-President of the United States. Considered a compromise between a vote in Congress and a popular vote of qualified citizens, the Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes grants America its next President and Vice-President. But we, as American citizens, do not vote directly for the President; rather, we vote for a group of electors who pledge to vote for our candidate. Our Founding Fathers thought that a direct vote would be “too chaotic and prone to error.” Yet, a major recurring problem with the process is that the candidate who wins the presidency does not necessarily win the popular vote, meaning they may not have majority of Americans voting in their favor, as in the cases of our 19th, 23rd, 43rd, and now our 45th president, Donald J. Trump. According to many public news sources and officials, “Trump is [still] on a quest to prove his legitimacy.” Amanda Dybal Staff Writer Coral reefs are a huge attraction to many. The beautiful under the sea attractions are located all over the earth and are homes to many creatures. The massive ecosystems are slowly being destroyed by the constant over fishing that is effecting the sustainability of the environment. Blast fishing also destroys the reefs. Blast fishing is when you explosives to stun or kill many fish at once. This illegal act not only kills the fish, but it kills the reefs around them. Water pollution is also killing many of the reefs. Oil spills, fertilizers, human and animal waste harm the reef when they get in the water. These pollinations can change the chemical makeup of the water as well as block sunlight from all of the coral. |
