Kenison Garratt Editor-in-Chief and A&E Editor In Wake County, two out of every ten people do not know where they will find their next meal. If this fact seems familiar, it is likely because it is a statistic that has been the focal point of every Empty Bowl Project poster that has found its place somewhere on a wall of Apex High school or on a corner of a bulletin board somewhere in the town. “Fill a bowl, fill a need,” reads the poster, and if one decides to be a part of the project, they will be doing just that. Cameron Goz Sports Editor On April 18, Apex’s own CougarTV displayed its first live broadcast of a lacrosse game between Leesville Road and the Cougars. While a few technical difficulties delayed the show shortly, it was back on air before anyone could fret. Commentating the landmark event were Apex seniors Liam Fulling and Jon Harden. With guest speaker Mike Bagnasco, the woman’s lacrosse coach, the program offered insight that would otherwise go unheard. John Mitchell, executive of CougarTV, and Principal Dr. Kearney had a vibrant bit of banter for the first ever halftime show. Viewers were a small part of history that day, not just because they were able to watch senior Alex McClure flaunt his gold cleats up and down the field but because they were present for the first of expectantly many CougarTV sports broadcasts. Drew Chegash Staff Writer In an effort to shake up the race for the Republican nomination, on April 27, Ted Cruz formally announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate. This certainly changes the game, as it is a bit unusual to choose a running mate this early in the race. The Trump team immediately deemed the move by Cruz as an act of desperation, but Cruz thinks otherwise. While he recognized it is out of the ordinary to choose a running mate this early, Cruz stated that “nobody is getting to 1,237 delegates,” the number needed to clinch the nomination, and voters should “know what [they] will get.” This move has seemed to be a response to Donald Trump’s claim that the race is effectively “over” for Cruz and Kasich. In accepting Cruz’s offer, Fiorina stated, “I’ve had tough fights all my life. Tough fights don’t worry me a bit.” The pairing of Cruz and Fiorina certainly creates a very diverse ticket-creating the possibility of having the first Hispanic president and first female vice president. Nick Stines News Editor In an airstrike on a pediatric hospital, Al Quds, in Syria, twenty-seven people were killed including children. In Aleppo, Syria, there has been a lot of fighting going on, and at least 148 civilians have been killed just in the last six days. UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said “In the last forty-eight hours, we have had an average of one Syrian killed every twenty-five minutes, one Syrian wounded every thirteen minutes.” Since it is either unknown to the public or has not been released, people do not know who was responsible for the bombing. “This devastating attack has destroyed a vital hospital in Aleppo, and the main referral center for pediatric care in the area. Where is the outrage among those with the power and obligation to stop this carnage,” said Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Head of Commission Muskilda Zancada. Médecins Sans Frontières is a French translation for Doctors Without Borders, a network of doctors who are willing to travel across borders for citizens in dire need of medical attention. MSF has been donating medical supplies to the Al Quds facility since 2012. “We condemn the destruction of the Al Quds hospital in #Aleppo, depriving people of essential healthcare. Hospitals are #notatarget, #Syria,” MSF International (@MSF) tweeted in outrage and protest. |
